NEW DOCUMENTARY EXPLORES THE MYSTERY OF THE "MICHIGAN RELICS"

The so-called "Michigan Relics" include somewhere between 3,000 and 9,000 artifacts bearing inscriptions that superficially resemble ancient cuneiform all of which supposedly were found in Michigan mounds between about 1890 and 1920. The objects include tablets, pipes, ornaments, and tools crafted from slate, copper, and clay. Many of the tablets are engraved with vivid scenes from the Old Testament, such as the Tower of Babel or Noah's Ark.

Archaeologists have dismissed the objects as crude fakes, but many people accepted them as proof that ancient Hebrews were the builders of America's marvelous mounds. More remarkably, some people still today believe that some or all of these artifacts might be authentic traces of Pre-Columbian Coptic Christians in Michigan.

These fascinating artifacts are the subject of a new documentary entitled "History or Hoax: the Michigan Relics" by Thom Bell, an independent Michigan filmmaker. The hour-long production tells the fascinating story of what has been characterized variously as the most massive archaeological fraud in history or the biggest archaeological tragedy.

Bell gives both sides in the debate the opportunity to present their evidence and arguments, but the most dramatic moment in the production is when Bell reveals the age of a key ceramic tablet as determined by a new luminescence date. It was made sometime between 1895 and 1910 – precisely the time period when these bizarre relics were being found and promoted.

Dr. Richard Stamps, who conducted perhaps the most thorough archaeological analysis of the Michigan Relics in recent years, is featured in the documentary. He observes that the problem for skeptics is that no matter how many of the thousands of artifacts you can show to be fraudulent, a believer can always hold out hope that some untested specimens still may be authentic. He says, quite rightly, "That's science. The door is always open." The burden of proof, however, is on those who want us to accept the extraordinary claim that Michigan was home to a large colony of ancient Egyptian Christians. They must show us the evidence that even one of the Michigan Relics is ancient. So far, the champions of this notion have not produced a luminescence, or any other kind of date indicating that any of these fantastic artifacts is ancient.

Sadly, I am compelled to agree with Francis Kelsey who wrote in 1911 that "so long as human nature remains the same, it may be presumed that men will be ready to believe what they wish to believe, and that no hoax will be too preposterous to be without a following."

It's not mentioned in the documentary, but there is an interesting if somewhat embarrassing Ohio connection to the Michigan Relics. After learning of the initial discoveries, William C. Mills, then the Curator for the Ohio Archaeological and Historical Society (now the Ohio Historical Society), visited one of these spurious digs for two days in 1909. In fact, he did some digging himself and "discovered" an inscribed tablet along with other artifacts. Of course, these items had been planted at the site for Mills to find, but he initially uncritically accepted them as authentic. The Ohio Historical Society has a few of the Michigan Relics in its collections. Although they are not currently on display, I present images of a few examples here for your examination.

I highly recommend the video for anyone who wants to understand the Michigan Relics or the enduring popularity of the notion that ancient Hebrews, Welshmen, Coptic Christians, or Vikings came to ancient America.

Similar hoaxes have been found in Ohio, notably an inscribed gold plate allegedly found in Cincinnati ca 1850-1960 and a brass hemishpere found in a gravel pit in Darke Co. ca. 1910. See:

I LIVE IN EAST TN= THE MICHIGAN RELICS SEEM TO HAVE A CUNIFORM STYLE THAT IS SIMILAR TO BABYLONIAN AND YET IT SEEMS TO BE CHRISTIANS THAT WERE IN THE COPPER RICH AREA?? MAYBE JEWS AND THEN CHRISTIANS FROM PERSIA WHO HAD THIER OWN STYLE OF CUNIFORM?? THIS ISNT A HOAX==WHO COULD SIT DOWN AND SKILLFULLY CREATE 30.000 OF THESE RELICS AND THEN BURY THEM EVYWHERE IN MICHIGAN?? IT WOULD TAKE A 100 PEOPLE 50 YEARS===THERE MAY BE CAVERNS OR CAVES UNDER MICHIGAN WHERE LOTS MORE STUFF WAS SORED BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MEN WHO DREW JESUS ON THE CROSS AS PER THE TRUE CHURCH IN ISRAEL?? HOW DID THEY SO COMPLETLY VANISH??

RSLtn -- Actually, the so-called Michigan Relics (also known as the Soper Frauds) are, indeed, frauds. See my previous post on this subject: http://ohio-archaeology.blogspot.com/2010/12/new-documentary-explores-mystery-of.html

if people hadnt plowed the relics out of the mounds and scattered them the "hoaxers" would have to beleive. the mounds are 1-2000 years old. a nation of people lived in the americas and its totally amazing that they totally vanished. there should be some stone foundations. perhaps the christians were absorbed into the indian nations? my hope is that the doctrine the church had in the michigan area is found. were they trinitarians? if some real scolars compare notes we can decipher the relics and im sure the results would amaze us all.

THE WHITE MEN WHO DUG THESE RELICS ABOUT 1895-1900 WERE JUST ORDINARY PEOPLE.
THEY HAD NO COLLEGE DEGREE. THE SCRIPTS,SUMERIAN,CODED NORDIC RUNES AND HEBREW WERE STILL NOT UNDERSTOOD OF MANY AND NOT PUBLISHED IN JOURNALS OR BOOKS THAT THE MEN COULD HAVE COPIED FROM
SOPER AND SAVAGE HAD NO ACCESS TO TEXTS THAT MIGHT HAVE DICIPHERED THE ANCEINT SCRIPTS.
THE ARCHAIC SCRIPTS ON THE MICHIGAN RELICS WERE NOT IN TEXTS THAT THE UNEDUCATED SOPER MIGHT HAVE USED.
THE ANC3INTS FROM FORIEGN LANDS,HEBREWS,NORDICS,PERSIANS AND CHRISTIANS CAME TO AMERICA WITH A THOROUGH KNOWKEDGE OF THESES SCRIPTS.
THIER SENTENCES ARE CORRECTLY FORMED AND CODED RUNES ARE DONE WITHOUT ANY ERROR
NO AMERICAN KNEW HOW TO WRITE ALL OF THESE ALL AT ONCE ON ONE ARTIFACT==NO SCOLAR IN AMERICA AND CERTAINLY NOT THE AVERAGE AMERICANS THAT DUG THEM
THE ISSUE HAS DEEP IMPLICATIONS OF A COVERUP BUT FOR WHAT REASON??
WHY CANT WE JUST FIND THEM ALL,SAVE THEM AND WRITE ABOUT THEM FOR EVERYONE TO LEARN FROM??

howdy all=i read about thermoluminescent dating of pottery and ceramics= there is a great chance for error= if the ceramic michigan relic wasnt heated to the right temperature when it was made then the TL test wont be correct==also the soil around the relics needs to be tested with gamma ray at the time the relic is dug and the relic was dug years before it was tested==i think that someone gave the relic a bum rap as they decided it was fake before they tested it and didnt allow for the possibility that the relic cant be tested because of the way it was made=let them test some of the relics the minute they are dug from a mound and test results will differ alot

Any artifact not found by an archaeologist is a fake. Just ask an archaeologist!

Anonymous -- You couldn't be more wrong in your claim that "any artifact not found by an archaeologist is a fake." Amateur archaeologists searching their local areas or just farmers plowing their fields have found many more artifacts than archaeologists have. My disseration research in Coshocton County was based almost entirely on artifacts found by non-archaeologists.

I would love to see the carbon dating tests on the organic matter found embedded / coating the inside groves of the etchings. Or embedded deep in structural cracks. Would give a good estimate of how long ago those items were covered.
